A missing SIM slot describes the hardware, not which subscriptions you can activate. When buying a phone abroad, confirm the exact model’s carrier and activation requirements before ordering. A physical airport SIM will not be a fallback for Duo.
Can I keep my home number and use a travel eSIM?
Yes, with compatible services. You can use a home eSIM alongside a travel eSIM, keeping one line for your existing number and the other for travel data. Keeping your home line active can still incur home-carrier roaming charges, so check the cost of calls and messages before departure.
If your number is currently on a physical SIM, arrange its conversion or transfer with your carrier. The available eSIM transfer and setup methods, including Quick Transfer, depend on carrier support. Moving your number and installing a separately purchased travel plan are different tasks.
Next, check the carrier lock:
- Open Settings → General → About.
- Find Carrier Lock.
- Look for No SIM restrictions.
If the device is locked, request an unlock from your carrier; Apple cannot unlock it for you. For a phone you have not yet received, confirm the lock policy with the seller before buying travel data.

- Required features: any need for hotspot use, a phone number, calls or SMS, and the selected plan’s stated limits.
Keep the plan instructions with your booking details so they are easy to find when setting up your phone. If a feature matters but is not stated, clarify it before purchasing.
How to install an eSIMNum travel eSIM
Have your installation details and a stable internet connection ready before you install an eSIM on your iPhone using a QR code. Follow the steps below; wording may differ by iOS version.
- Read the plan’s timing instructions. Check when validity starts before you install.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or a hotspot. Keep the connection available during setup.
- Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data → Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code. Scan the supplied code and follow the prompts.
- Label the line clearly. For example, use “eSIMNum Travel” so you can distinguish it from “Home.”

What if the QR code is on the same phone?
On iOS 17.4 or later, when a carrier QR code arrives in the default email app or browser, you can press and hold the QR code to add an eSIM, then choose Add eSIM. If that option is unavailable, display the code on another screen to scan, or use manual entry when your provider supplies those details.
Which settings should I use when I arrive?
Give each line a clear role. The following is a suggested starting setup for using a separate travel data plan:

When you set up your eSIMNum data line, follow the installation instructions for data-line selection and travel-line roaming. Turning off home-line data roaming does not make all home-line services free; home-carrier charges can still apply.
Two active eSIMs do not combine their data connections. iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time. With data switching off, cellular data will not work during a call on a different, non-data voice line. Review that trade-off if you need internet access during calls.
Will WhatsApp and iMessage still work?
You can keep your registered WhatsApp number while a different eSIM provides its internet connection. Adding a travel data line does not itself change your WhatsApp number.
You can also continue using iMessage and FaceTime while traveling with an eSIM. Internet messaging is separate from receiving a carrier SMS or making a regular phone call; those depend on the relevant line and service.

Do not delete your eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless your carrier directs you to. If you remove it, you may need to contact the provider for a replacement.

Can I move my old physical SIM directly into Duo?

Can all eight stored eSIMs be active together?
